About Eric Chapman

William Eric Chapman (1973–2025) lived a life full of bold adventure, deep loyalty, and unwavering service. A 1981 Sandhills student, Eric overcame the challenges of dyslexia to earn a degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and become a highly respected aircraft mechanic and Gulfstream pilot. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1992–1996 and built a life marked by compassion, humor, and resilience. Whether flying across the world, helping a friend in need, or sharing a laugh, Eric was known for showing up wholeheartedly.

Dyslexia, Determination, and the Sandhills Connection

Eric once returned to speak with Sandhills students about becoming a pilot. When asked about failure, he offered this wisdom:

"Don’t be afraid to fail. I don’t mean try to fail - I mean if you do, learn from it. Do your best. And even then, if you fail, use it as a learning experience."

Eric embodied what is possible when a bright dyslexic student finds the right path. This fund ensures students like Eric continue to receive the support and encouragement they need to discover their potential.
