Why I love Sandhills
“Sandhills is a wonderful community. We support each other and the students.”
Lucas first connected with Sandhills as a parent, when her daughter struggled to learn to read in first grade. She enrolled in the OG course at Sandhills in the summer of 2011 and joined the faculty that fall. Since then, she’s become a passionate educator who values the school’s mission and the joy she finds in both the students and the community.
Why I Enjoy Working with Students with Dyslexia
“These children are so smart! It is so much fun to see their take on learning and how their brain works.”
Lucas finds joy in seeing students’ unique perspectives and the lightbulb moments when they begin to understand and own their learning.
Favorite School Tradition
- Founders Day: Lucas enjoys Founders Day for its energy, spirit, and the way it honors the legacy of those who started Sandhills. She loves seeing the students have fun while learning about the school’s history.
Life Outside of School
In her free time, Lucas enjoys visiting the Riverbanks Zoo—especially the botanical gardens—exploring Congaree National Park, playing pickleball, trying new restaurants like Crave, and walking through Columbia’s many neighborhoods.
