Journey to Sandhills

Liz fell in love with the Orton-Gillingham approach while teaching at Trident Academy in Mt. Pleasant, SC, where she taught Language Training to 5th–12th graders as well as early elementary classes including 2nd grade and a K5/1st combo class. After moving to Columbia, she continued working with students through private tutoring. She later reached out to Anne Vickers to inquire about joining Sandhills and was thrilled to be welcomed to the team.

Why I Love Sandhills

Liz values being part of a school where teachers understand that there are many ways to demonstrate intelligence. She appreciates the opportunity to truly know each student and create lessons that are individualized, multisensory, and emotionally sound.

“Our students are the top reason I work here. These kids are bright, creative, amazing individuals who all have the potential to be successful.”

Why I Love Working with Students with Dyslexia

Liz loves helping students reach the moment where they realize they’re capable of applying rules and strategies on their own. She enjoys the unique ways her students think and thrives on digging into the “wacky” side of the English language—especially when she gets to share the history and logic behind it.

A Favorite Lesson to Teach

Liz brings energy and humor to her lessons on au/aw vowel teams. She’s even created a card game called Awful Dinosaur that students love—so much so that even 9th graders still ask to play!

Favorite School Tradition

  • One of Liz’s favorite moments each year is the celebration of learning and creativity that unfolds through the many student-centered events at Sandhills.

Life Outside of School

When she’s not in the classroom, Liz enjoys road trips (especially to the mountains), gardening, and reading. You’ll often find her at Soda City, catching a film at the Nickelodeon Theater, or dining outdoors—just not in August!
