Journey to Sandhills
Kim’s path to the classroom started at home—after her son was diagnosed with dyslexia, she pursued Orton-Gillingham training at Camperdown Academy in Greenville to support his learning. When her family moved to Columbia, her son enrolled at Sandhills, and Kim began subbing at the school. After retiring from a career in health care, she returned to Sandhills and now teaches Language Training part time.
What I Value About the Sandhills Community
Kim appreciates the strong support and encouragement from her colleagues.
“Anne Vickers is always willing to share her expertise and offer guidance. It’s a team effort here.”
She also values how Sandhills gives students the time and tools they need to succeed.
Why I Enjoy Working with Students with Dyslexia
Kim enjoys the variety and energy that comes with teaching differently wired learners.
“Children with dyslexia are very bright and out-of-the-box thinkers—there’s never a dull moment!”
Favorite School Tradition
- The end-of-year student plays are Kim’s favorite tradition. She loves seeing students show their creativity and confidence on stage.
Life Outside of School
Outside the classroom, Kim enjoys cooking classes, visiting local art galleries, and biking Columbia’s scenic trails.
